The crawler that keeps the newspaper list current
ToneWick keeps a reading list of newspapers from every province and region of China, from Hong Kong and Macau, and from Taiwan, so that people learning to read Chinese can find real writing to practise on. A small program checks that list. This page explains exactly what it does, in English and in Chinese.
What it does
- It opens the public home page of a newspaper that is already on the list, reads the page title, and records whether the site answered.
- It reads the public link directories that newspapers publish, to learn about papers in cities and counties that are not on the list yet.
- That is all. It does not copy articles, it stores no personal information, and it does not sign in, submit forms, or open anything a visitor could not open.
How it behaves
- It identifies itself in every request as
ToneWickPapersBot, with a link to this page and the address hello@tonewick.com. - It obeys
robots.txton every site, including any crawl delay, and does not fetch what a site asks crawlers not to fetch. - It waits several seconds between requests to the same site, makes only a few requests per site per run, and stops for the day if a site asks it to slow down.
- It does not work around blocking of any kind and uses no proxy. If a site or a network declines, it records that and moves on.
- It takes no political position and states none. It is a library tool for language learners.
If you would rather it did not visit
Add ToneWickPapersBot to your robots.txt, or write to hello@tonewick.com and we will remove your site from the list. Both are honoured without argument.
